Museon, Martial Meditation 武禪

Picture
Museon means "Martial Meditation".  Martial arts practice has been used as a form of meditation for centuries, and its history is a long and storied one.  The practice begins centuries ago at the Shaolin temple.  The monks of the temple had long practiced martial arts to defend their temple & lands.  With Bodhidharma's introduction of Chan meditation, the integration of physical self-protection with spiritual self-perfection began.  The martial meditation practice at Gakhwang Temple continues this centuries old tradition, merging intense meditation with physical self-expression.

The martial arts taught at Gakhwang Temple encompass the totality of combat, combined with deep introspective practice.  While they are at their foundation Seon practices, they are available to anyone of any religious or philosophical background.

Gakhwang Temple offers training in a modern martial way that has ancient roots.  It is the only Buddhist temple in the world devoted to the study and practice of Contemporary Jeet Kune Do.  Jeet means "Intercept".  Kune means "Fist" or "Boxing".  Do means Way, as in a path to follow.  Thus, Jeet Kune Do means "The Way of the Intercepting Fist".  Jeet Kune Do was created by the legendary martial artist, actor, and philosopher, Bruce Lee.  Profoundly influenced by Zen Buddhism, Jeet Kune Do was created to be both an effective fighting art and a path for spiritual self-development.  Gakhwang Temple combines Jeet Kune Do training with ancient martial meditation practices known as Cheolryun Museon to provide a complete system of training that addresses the body, mind, and soul.

Gakhwang Temple also offers training in Brazilian Jujutsu.  Jujutsu, the martial art of the Samurai, teaches smaller, weaker persons to defeat larger, stronger attackers using leverage, joint locks, and chokeholds.  It is an excellent system of self-defense for women and children.
